Born on April 3, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois, Lami later moved to Lagos State, Nigeria, where she attended Corona School, Victoria Island, for her elementary education. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to Queen's College in Yaba, Lagos, and she continued her academic journey abroad, earning a BA (Hons) at the University of Kent, UK. Lami furthered her education, obtaining a Master's degree from the University of Nottingham and an Executive MBA from Pennsylvania State University.

Lami Phillips is a proud member of the Phillips family, born to Mr. and Mrs. Olumide Phillips. Chief Olumide Phillips, her father, is a distinguished Nigerian businessman and owner of Dowen College. Her mother, Mrs. Toyin Phillips, is an entrepreneur and part owner of Dowen College. Lami has three sisters and a brother, the only son in the family.

Lami's musical journey began in the UK, where she took vocal lessons and joined the choir at Jesus House, UK. She made her professional debut when she relocated to Nigeria. The breakthrough came with her hit single 'Know,' featuring M.I, in 2009, followed by the release of her debut album 'Intuition' the same year. Notable songs include 'Titi Lai Lai,' 'Sunshine' ft Harrysong, 'Yago,' 'Baby mi,' and 'Orimiwu.' Despite a hiatus, she maintained her influence by starring in Nollywood movies.
