Rema was born in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, and grew up in a Christian family. He discovered his love for singing and rapping during his time in secondary school. Rema attended Ighile Group of Schools in Edo State for both his primary and secondary education.
Rema began his career in churches alongside Alpha P. His big break came in 2018 when he posted a freestyle to D'Prince's "Gucci Gang" on Instagram, catching D'Prince's attention. This led to Rema getting signed by D'Prince's Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records owned by Don Jazzy, in 2019.
Rema's debut EP, self-titled "Rema", was released the same year and topped the charts on Apple Music Nigeria. The music video for "Dumebi", a hit song from his EP, was released in May 2019 and has since garnered over 70 million views on YouTube. Another song from his EP made it to former US President Barack Obama's summer playlist in 2019.
In 2020, Rema's music was featured on the FIFA 21 soundtracks. In 2021, he announced a new sound he called "Afrorave", a subgenre of Afrobeats with Arabian and Indian influences. This unique sound has earned him a strong fan base known as Ravers. Rema also became a brand ambassador for Pepsi in September 2021.
Rema marked a significant milestone when his songs reached 1 billion streams worldwide in November 2022. The next year, in October 2023, he performed at the prestigious Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris, France.
Rema's debut album "Rave & Roses" was released in March 2022, featuring collaborations with artists like 6lack, Chris Brown, AJ Tracey, and Yseult. The album made a strong debut on the US Billboard Afrobeats Chart. His single "Calm Down", which includes a sample from Crayon's track "So Fine", became the most-watched Afrobeats video on YouTube. A remix of the song featuring Selena Gomez was a major hit, reaching number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. Chart.
In 2023, Rema was honored as the Digital Artist of the Year at the Soundcity MVP Awards. He then released an extended version of his debut album, "Rave & Roses Ultra", which became the first African album to surpass one billion streams on Spotify.
He continued his streak of success with the release of a 5-track EP titled "Ravage" on 26 October 2023.
Rema's mother is Mrs. Ikubor, and not much information is available about her. In 2017, when Rema returned from Ghana, he bought a 2020 Lexus RX 350 for his mother. Rema's father was Justice Ikubor. Unfortunately, he passed away at a hotel one night after checking in with a woman. On September 28, 2020, Rema accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a tweet, suggesting that his father's passing was connected to his involvement with the party, as Justice Ikubor was a former party chieftain.
Rema has three siblings - two sisters and one late brother. His elder brother passed away seven years after his birth.
Rema has been linked to Nimiie and media personality Diana Eneje in the past, but there is no concrete evidence to support these claims. As of now, Rema is single. He has mentioned that when he finds the right person, he will be open to being in a relationship.

On March 22, 2019, D'Prince, a recording artist, established a Nigerian record label and management organization called Jonzing World. The distribution of the label is currently handled by Mavin Global, a subsidiary of Mavin Records. Jonzing World provides various services such as management, branding, audiovisual content, and music recording. The label represents artists like Rema, Ruger, and its founder D'Prince. Mavin Records, also known as the Supreme Mavin Dynasty, was founded on May 8, 2012, by Don Jazzy, a record producer, musician, and record executive. The label was formed after the closure of Mo' Hits Records, which was previously run by Don Jazzy and D'banj.
Rema's highly-anticipated concert, scheduled for September 9, 2023, at the Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was abruptly cancelled. The cancellation came after a controversy over a necklace worn by the singer depicting a church in flames with inverted crosses. The imagery sparked outrage within the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the general public, and led to accusations of Rema being associated with devil worship. These reactions prompted the hotel's management to cancel the event. The controversy was discussed on a Nigerian media program, where an Ethiopian woman shared that fears about Rema's necklace implying devil worship led to the cancellation.
Since rising to fame, Rema has chosen to keep his landed homes private and has not showcased them to his fans. However, his wealth allows him to afford a nice home in any part of Lagos.
When it comes to cars, Rema has an impressive collection. He was gifted a BMW beamer by the BMW Club of Nigeria as a token of appreciation for promoting the BMW brand in his popular song "Beamer (Bad Boys)." Additionally, Rema is the owner of a GAC SUV. He received this spacious SUV as the second-place prize at the 2019 Headies award ceremony. The GAC SUV is equipped with a powerful 5.7-liter V8 engine, which offers improved acceleration compared to other models.
Rema is considered one of the wealthiest young musicians in Nigeria, with a net worth of $1.5 million. This means he has accumulated a significant amount of wealth through his music career.
Rema can be found on Instagram with the username @heisrema.
