Also known as Shola Idowu and The Rappatainer, she stands out as one of Africa's most popular female rappers and holds a distinctive place among Nigerian artists associated with Afrobeat.

Hailing from Ogun, Weird MC was born in the United Kingdom to conservative parents who initially disapproved of her pursuing a career in entertainment. Despite their reservations, she attended Maryland Comprehensive Secondary School in Lagos. She later formed the hip-hop group Weirdos during her school days. Following unsuccessful attempts at securing a record deal, Weird MC enrolled at Ogun State University to study Law but left after a year to focus on her music career. Subsequently, she earned a qualification in Music Technology.

 

 

 

Musical Career

 

 

 

Weird MC embarked on her musical odyssey in the early '90s, drawing inspiration from legends like Fela Kuti, Miriam Makeba, Queen Latifah, and Jimi Hendrix. Engaging in rap battles, she gained recognition and toured the UK with DJ P Tee Money in 1990 and 1991. In 1992, her transition to the name Weird MC marked a significant step, accompanied by the release of the single "I Wanna Make You Jack/Let's Get Wet."

 

Returning to Nigeria in 1996, Weird MC unveiled "Simply Weird," an avant-garde blend of American hip-hop and Afrobeat. Despite being ahead of its time, the album earned her the esteemed AMEN award for Best Hip Hop Album.

 

In 2006, Weird MC continued to evolve her musical prowess with the release of "After Da Storm." The album's standout single, "Ijoya," produced by Don Jazzy and JJC, propelled her to new heights, securing the AMEN award for Most Pop Song and a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect.

 

Beyond her solo ventures, Weird MC showcased her versatility by collaborating with notable artists like Femi Kuti and Kween. Her impact extended to reality TV when she participated in the celebrity version of Gulder Ultimate Search in 2010.

 

Weird MC's musical journey stands as a testament to her resilience, innovation, and enduring influence on the Nigerian music scene.
